Policy-at-Munk Fall (2023) Case Competition

Date of Event: Friday, November 3, 2023

Location: Campbell Conference Centre on Devonshire Place from 9 am to 3 pm.

We invite all first and second year MPP and MGA students to enter the annual Policy-at-Munk Fall Case Competition. The event will take place in person at the Campbell Conference Centre on Devonshire Place on November 3, 2023, running from 9 am to 3 pm. Over your programs, there are several opportunities to compete against other schools and organizations in case competitions, for example, the National Annual Public Administration Case Competition, the Ford+Munk conference, Global Public Policy Network (G.P.P.N.), the SHIFT case competition and others.  Also, many courses require case preparation and presentation to help develop in-demand professional skills.  The Policy-at-Munk Fall Case Competition provides a unique opportunity to develop and hone these skills and have some fun at the same time.

The competition will follow the format of the National Public Administration Case Competition and will allow students to test their skills and decide if they want to try out for our National Team in February.  Performance in the Fall Case Competition is one factor used to select our National Team.

Students are invited to enter individually or with a colleague.  No resume is required – just your name, year and program.  We will be holding a training session in late October after registration is closed. The organizers will form teams, to mix first- and second-year students from MPP and MGA.  The teams will receive the case challenge one week before the competition.  Each team will be assigned a coach who will work with it over the week-long preparation phase.  On November 3, the teams will present their proposals to a team of external judges who will determine a winner and provide feedback.

Our judges for this year’s even are as follows:

  1. Tina Green, Assistant Secretary, Regulatory Affairs Sector, Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat , Government of Canada.

  2. Denise Andrea Campbell, Executive Director, Social Development, Finance and Administration, City of Toronto.

  3. Melissa Thomson, Deputy Minister of Long-Term Care and Deputy Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility, Government of Ontario.

  4. Jonathan Lebi, Assistant Deputy Minister, Integrated Policy and Planning Division, Ministry of Transportation, Government of Ontario.

Please register by October 18 at 5pm to be on the waitlist. Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Registration Update!

Dear First and Second Year MPP and MGA Students,

We’re pleased to report that there has been an overwhelming response for the Policy-at-Munk Fall Case Competition registration. It's been fantastic to see so much enthusiasm from all of you to participate in this event.

However, due to the high number of registrations we've received, we have reached our maximum capacity for the competition. Therefore, we unfortunately have had to close the registration process, and the event is now on a waitlist basis.

As mentioned earlier, registration for the competition was on a first-come, first-served basis, and we reached our capacity faster than anticipated. We understand that this might be disappointing for some of you, but please know that we are working to accommodate as many participants as possible.

For those who would like to add their names to the waitlist, please email Rida Syeda at rida.syeda@mail.utoronto.ca by October 18 at 5pm. Note: include your name, year, and program in the email, and organizers will ensure your name is added to the waitlist.

For those who have successfully registered, we will be in touch with further details, including the training session schedule and team assignments, in the coming weeks. We appreciate your understanding and continued support for the Policy-at-Munk Fall Case Competition.

We are excited to see your dedication to developing your skills and look forward to an incredible event on November 3, 2023.

Thank you once again for your enthusiasm, and we will do our best to make this competition a valuable experience for all participants.
